
The 2026 AFFATL Wraps with Bold Storytelling
and Global Engagement
[Atlanta, GA] (April 20, 2026) – The African Film Festival Atlanta, presented by the African Film & Arts Foundation, concluded a vibrant five-day on March 30th, bringing together filmmakers, industry leaders, and audiences from across Africa and the diaspora, welcoming approximately 800 attendees.
The 2026 edition showcased a dynamic slate of feature films, short films, and documentaries, with filmmakers in attendance offering audiences deeper insight into their work through engaging post-screening Q&A sessions. These conversations created space for reflection on identity, history, and the evolving landscape of African storytelling. Alongside the screenings, panel discussions explored critical themes at the intersection of culture and technology, including conversations on artificial intelligence, representation, and the future of global narratives.
A key moment during the festival was the presence of Segun Adeyina, whose remarks highlighted the importance of cultural platforms like AFFATL in strengthening community ties and international exchange. The festival was also recognized with an official proclamation from the City of Atlanta, underscoring its growing cultural impact.
The festival announced its 2026 jury, a distinguished group of industry professionals shaping film and media across continents. The Features Jury includes Nwakaego Boyo, a Nigerian actress, producer, and creative entrepreneur, and Njoki Muhoho, Founder and President of Women in Film & TV (WIFT) Kenya. The Shorts Jury includes Kabelo Thathe, a South African cinematographer, and Darah Barnes of Aspire TV.
The festival also unveiled its 2026 award nominees, recognizing excellence in filmmaking across narrative and documentary categories: Announcements will be made at the end of May 2026:
- Best Feature Narrative: Aisha Can’t Fly Away; Son of the Soil; To Adaego With Love
- Best Short Narrative: A Fight for Time; Morwaake (My Son); The House That Never Sleeps
- Best Feature Documentary: Stand Together As One: The Famine, The Music, The Impact; The Assassination of President William R. Tolbert Jr.; The Eyes of Ghana
- Best Short Documentary: Beyond Tarkwa Bay; Dying for Water; Untold Stories
In recognition of its growing cultural impact, the festival received a formal proclamation from the City of Atlanta, affirming its role in advancing arts, culture, and global storytelling.
The African Film Festival Atlanta will return in 2027, continuing its mission to amplify African and diaspora voices and foster meaningful creative exchange. 2027 festival dates: TBD.
