SYNOPSIS

Awani is a documentary that serves as a timeline that examines the evolution of the role of Nigerian women, starting from pre-colonial Nigeria to the present day. The documentary uses a blend of archival footage and expert commentary to explore how colonialism has shaped political and social attitudes towards women but to also celebrate women from the past. Awani is a thought-provoking documentary that aims to simply answer the question, how did we get here? Awani received a grant from the Ford Foundation and recently won a UNESCO prize.

Director's Bio

Aderonke Adeola is a writer, director and producer. She is currently promoting her short documentary Awani, which recently won a UNESCO award. Awani was supported by the Ford Foundation and has been screened at the Ake festival, Yale Africa Film Festival, Durban International Film Festival, New York African Film Festival and Africa International Film Festival. Awani also won an award of merit from the Impact documentary awards 2019. She is currently researching her next project. In addition to filmmaking, she is a freelance writer and has written for the Guardian and Thisday newspaper. Her writing covers art, culture, interviews and gender. As a filmmaker, she has worked on projects for RedTV and worked on the award winning film Half of a Yellow Sun.
